New catalysts convert greenhouse gas

June 23, 2014--Feng Jiao, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at UD, has developed a highly selective silver catalyst capable of electrochemically converting carbon dioxide — a greenhouse gas — to carbon monoxide with 92 percent efficiency.

Now, with more than $400,000 in new funding from an NSF CAREER Award, Jiao’s research group is exploring the use of bimetallic catalysts for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO).

“Exploring an area no one else has considered is exciting,” Jiao said. “It’s not just about how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also about how we can use advanced technology to convert something with a negative impact into something positive that can improve how society generates and consumes energy.”
